This week, I had the chance to visit the winery that CVNE has about 10km from Laguardia; Viña Real.
It is situated on top of a hill, a circular building, which one can not imagine how it will be and what to expect to see on that hill. The winery Viña Real is named as a lot of years ago there was a road that linked Castilla and Navarra.
Before the visit, at the entrance to the cellar, we find a very large open-space where the wine shop, one of the dining rooms and the entrance to the real winery are presented.
The winery has 600 hectares of vineyards, and other 600 hectares are purchased to other growers. It has an annual production of 7 million bottles (Considering the production of the winery in Haro).
We enter the alcoholic fermentation area, it is a circular room, imitating the shape of a giant vat. There are 72 stainless steel tanks where the wine will conduct its first fermentation. Since the wine enters to the winery, until it is bottled, it will be moved by gravity, pumps are not used (this was a new system patented by the winery).
Underneath the stainless steel tanks, there are concrete tanks where wine will perform the second fermentation (except the high-quality wines who perform this fermentation in new barrels). These deposits are communicated directly with the bottom of the cellar where the wine will aged in barrels and later will be bottled.
After seeing this area of the winery, we headed to the bottom. Here, we discovered two tunnels 125m high, built by the company that made the metro in Bilbao and other underground tunnels worldwide. Each of the tunnels is dedicated to aging wine in barrels (There are a total of 25,000 barrels) and for aging in bottle.
After visiting these two modern drafts, we headed to the last room prior to the tasting. It is a located beneath the alcoholic fermentation area, it is a circular room where high quality wines will age in barrel. Along with the two tunnels, it is the most beautiful and striking cellar room. We find French, American and some Eastern European barrels, that will rest here until the time of being bottled.
To end the tour, we headed to the entrance for two wine tasting.
-Monopole: White wine, produced in the Haro, vintage 2014. 100% Viura. With a yellowish pulling green, very fresh with aromas of fresh fruits such as apples.
- Viña Real Oro Reserva 2006: Tempranillo, Graciano, Grenache and Mazuelo. A more classical style. With intense wood, and classical colour.
A classical winery with modern architecture.
